Exporting Audio for Post-Production Audio Magic

Software glitches, update bugs, codecs, workow issues, and deliverable specications can disrupt the process of creating great stories and kill inspiration. At Underscore Audio, we want to make the audio in your videos as compelling as possible by eliminating audio distractions, enhancing sound quality, drawing out and accentuating emotional moments and performances, and giving your audio that blockbuster sparkle. To avoid email/phone tag and spend the maximum time on making the audio feel magical, below is a list of details, assets, specs, and deliverables we need before getting to work on every project.

1. Directorial Notes

2. Final Viewing Mediums and Deliverable Specifications

Will these videos be on Broadcast TV, Radio, Social, Mobile, Web, Netflix, Theaters, Mars?
We know the standards for LUFS & Db for the standard mediums, but if your client has specific needs, we want to meet them on our first mixes.

3. Video Preview - 1080 version of Picture Lock

We need a video preview of every video we do audio for so we can guarantee audio sync to picture and the timing of sound effects. On-screen hand gestures and off-screen crew noise can sound the same in the dark. We need to see which to keep and which to delete.

4. Picture-Synced Raw Audio Assets

  • If you used a production sound mixer, we want all the recorded audio tracks from their field recorders synced to picture! This includes their mix tracks and I so tracks. So, please re-link and confirm that all the audio is synced to picture and all that extra audio is present before rending the AAF (Note: Nested Sequences Can Create Massive Problems Here ... In short ... please avoid nested sequences when on-cam audio is important
  • If you didn’t have a production sound mixer, please include ALL your camera audio for on screen clips even if you think it sounds bad ... because magic.
  • When possible, please organize audio before exporting AAF into groups:
    • Dialogue
    • SFX
    • Music
  • Please sync Un-Tagged Library Music before exporting AAF
    • Pro Tools Audio Relinking is unreliable for replacing specifically placed tagged music with the untagged files.

5. AAF Export Specifics - (An AAF is audio version of your timeline we work from in Pro Tools

  • Please ensure AAF begins at the exact same time as the picture lock video reference. ***See Notes Picture Below***
  • screenshot of required AAF export settings with Handle Frames settings circled in red and set to 240. There is a note that says that this setting is very important for crossfading
  • Check the “Render Audio Clip Effects” box only if you added audio effects editing you prefer to keep and please check “Include Clip Copies Without Effects too."

5. AAF Export Specifics - (An AAF is audio version of your timeline we work from in Pro Tools

Please include the raw files from your sound mixer or field recorder so we can find room tones and foley if needed

Please include raw versions of any SFX placed in timeline

Please include raw wavs of untagged music files
